First Dance
My favorite part of the wedding reception is the first dance of the bride and groom. This always allows for great emotion and I love trying to capture the couple in motion. Here are a few of my favorites:
Three bridesmaids watching the dance:
Technically, this is the father of the bride, but I love the motion:

While my signature AuthentiCapture approach is perfect for attaining a photojournalistic account of a wedding in a candid style, it also lends itself well to bridal portraits. My portraiture style is casual, requiring less formal posing and time. This also allows more of the natural beauty of my subject and the authentic feeling of the moment to shine through.

What is AuthentiCapture?
The AuthentiCapture approach:
My photography stresses authenticity, capturing natural beauty and emotion in order to truly tell the story of your wedding day. From bridal preparation to your grand departure, these moments are about you and so I aim to be unobtrusive—following and recording real experiences as they happen.
Yet, AuthentiCapture isn't just about the candid shots. By taking a little time for some casual portraiture (individual, couple or group) we can achieve those special shots that characterize you on your wedding day. I keep my portraiture relaxed and fun, encouraging freedom of movement and expression, because natural beauty often comes best with little or no direction.
Authentically you:
You spend great time and effort to plan a wedding day that is memorable and unique and the pictures of that day should be as genuine as the personalities involved. If you're looking for a day's worth of set up shots, tailored to someone else's idea of what your wedding should look like, then I'm not the photographer for you. On the other hand, if you want pictures that are customized to your particular day and to the personalities of you and your family and friends, then you are looking for the AuthentiCapture approach.
Poise:
Photography is not just about knowing how; it is about knowing when. There are times to be relaxed, fun and even wild; and there are other times and places where prudence and solemnity are paramount. I am happy to work with you and your ceremony site in order to conform to rules, personalities and comfort levels.
Authentically me:
My name is Craig Spiering and I am Spiering Photography. My portfolio is my work and no other will come in my stead. If you elect to have an additional photographer work with me, know that he or she will be working according to my standards in order to capture peripheral shots, while I remain the primary photographer. This is how I ensure that you get the quality of work you expect on such an important day. Find out why my clients enjoy working with me to capture the moments that will last a lifetime.

Craig's Biography
Who am I?
I am an artist, professional, husband and father.
I studied photography in 2003 at the Defense Information School in Fort George G. Meade, Maryland and returned to study photojournalism in 2004. As a U.S. Navy Photographer, I was stationed on the nuclear-powered aircraft carrier USS Harry S. Truman. I photographed events and day-to-day operations of the Navy both in port and at sea, preferring the speed and excitement of aircraft flight operations. We operated in the Atlantic, Mediterranean Sea, Persian Gulf and the U.S. Gulf Coast for relief efforts just days after Hurricane Katrina hit there. I earned a Joint Services Achievement Medal for my work in photographing and managing a team of photographers during hurricane relief efforts in September 2005. The U.S. Navy’s official website features 120 of my images and many others can be found in various military magazines and websites.
I was, at first, reluctant to photograph weddings after several friends had asked. "I’m a military photographer. I don’t do weddings,” was my response. However, their persistence paid off and I ended up falling in love with capturing the once in a lifetime moments found only on that very special day.
I left the glory of military photography behind, refining my style and bringing my passion, talent and photojournalism experience to one of the most exciting, dynamic and emotional experiences: The Wedding Day. I find great joy in creating art that is beautiful and memorable and I look forward to sharing this joy with you.
I currently reside in northern Virginia with my family and photograph weddings in Virginia, Maryland, West Virginia, Washington D.C. and occasionally beyond.

Andrew & Meghan: Front Royal Wedding
A beautiful Irish bride in a gorgeous dress, a handsome groom who holds nothing back when he laughs, a photoshoot at Killahevlin Bed & Breakfast in Front Royal, Virginia (an Irish B&B with a Victorian theme)... How could things go wrong?

Details, Details, Details
Notice the Claddagh ring / wedding bell topper:
And...my signature dancing shot:
Meghan and her father, with the couple's names on wall in the background:

Sam & Katie: Christendom Chapel Wedding
At the beginning of May, I shot a wedding for Sam and Katie at the Chapel of Christ the King on Christendom College Campus and, I have to say, I was incredibly impressed with how elegant and classic everything was. The reception was at Bowling Green Country Club.
This is shot was so beautiful in its sheer simplicity. Then, just add an antique tone and voila!
The original colors:
The coattails were an especially nice touch:
I thought this shot worked well with this old-fashioned look added to it:
My signature dancing shot:
The couple led the wedding party and guests in a rousing contra dance: the Virginia Reel
